’Well eye 7th place

-

Motherwell exorcised the demons of a 5-1 humbling against St Johnstone on Saturday as a Ryan Bowman strike gave them a 1-0 win at Partick Thistle on Tuesday.

The result more or less consigned the Jags to one of the bottom two places.

A trip to Dundee now beckons for Alan Archibald’s men, who must win at Dens Park to guarantee that scenario, with bottom side Ross County visiting St Johnstone with a superior goaldifference and the capability of overhauling them into 11th spot.

Knowing that automatic relegation is still a possibility, Thistle attacked Motherwell from the first whistle, with Conor Sammon heading just past the post in the opening minute.

Those fears of being hit by a sucker punch were almost realised in 26 minutes when Bowman was allowed time to turn inside the box, but the striker slammed a shot wide to let the Jags off the hook.

The half was brought to a close when Ryan Edwards found himself free inside the box, but his attempt to find Kris Doolan was blocked by Tom Aldred.

Chris Erskine’s strike was then kept out by Trevor Carson.

Sammon flashed an effort wide in 55 minutes as a clinical edge continued to eludethistle.

And they were made to pay for that in 60 minutes when David Turnbull’s free kick was met with a powerful header by Bowman.
