Eddie’s end of term after his 37 years as a teacher
Farewell to St John Ogilvie
He spent nearly four decades dedicating his life to teaching – but the head teacher of St John Ogilvie High has put down his marking pen for the last time.
Eddie Morrison said his final farewell to staff, pupils and members of the community during a special mass service at St John Ogilvie Church on Monday, June 25, before turning in his books when the bell rang for the summer holidays last Thursday.
He had been teaching for 37 years and spent the last 11 years as head teacher at the Hamilton school.
Tony Mcdaid, executive director of Education Resources at South Lanarkshire Council, thanked him for his years of service this week, saying: “I wish to convey my personal thanks to Mr Morrison for his dedication and commitment to education throughout his teaching career.
“He has been both a passionate and inspirational teacher and leader and is known for his strong leadership and unreserved commitment to provide the best education and opportunities possible for all his pupils.
“Eddie is a highly-respected head teacher not only here in South Lanarkshire, but throughout Scotland.
“He has been teaching for 37 years, the last 11 as head teacher of St John Ogilvie High School, where he created a culture of ambition and resilience. The partnerships he has helped to build within the local community and beyond have been instrumental in providing some wonderful opportunities for both pupils and staff alike to develop their skills and set high aspirations.
“His work with St Andrew’s Hospice over the years deserves to be recognised and reflects the care and compassion he has for others. As a school community, they have raised more than £100,000 for the hospice – a fantastic achievement and legacy.”
Mr Morrison is to be succeeded by the current depute head teacher at the school, Lorna Lawson, in August.
Mr Mcdaid added: “I know the community of St John Ogilvie High School, staff, pupils, the parent council and families will join me in wishing Eddie a peaceful and healthy retirement.
“I am also delighted to welcome Ms Lorna Lawson, who was the depute head teacher, as she prepares to take on her new role as head teacher from the beginning of the new term in August.”
