Bollards shake-up

Consultation is extended

- Stephanie Mccourt

A consultation on changes to the layout of a Hamilton street has been extended.

As previously reported in the Advertiser, South Lanarkshire Council has spent thousands of pounds maintaining “regularly demolished bollards” along Sherry Drive.

A Freedom of Information request obtained by a resident of Torhead Farm showed that £ 13,000 had been spent replacing or repairing 46 bollards along the road over the past decade.

Fed- up residents also slammed the measures as “dangerous” and “poorly implemented”, and called for their removal.

Following a council review, the chicanes are due to be replaced by an alternative traffic calming measure as resurfacing works take place later this year on Sherry Drive, from Nevis Avenue to Stewart Avenue.

A consultation on changes to the layout of Sherry Drive has been extended by the authority “to try and capture as many views as possible of people who use the road”.

As well as completing an online survey, local road users can also go along to a special drop-in event which will take place at St Mark’s Primary School on Monday, August 27, from 5 to 7.30pm.

To access the online survey go to: https:// tinyurl.com/slc-sd18

The link will be open until Tuesday, August 28.

The four options to improve the road layout are:

1. Replace all chicanes with nine sets of speed cushions

2. Remove all chicanes and provide four Vehicle Activated Signs ( VAS) along the length of Sherry Drive

3. Remove all chicanes and introduce seven narrow islands at points along Sherry Drive

4. Remove all chicanes, introduce parttime mandatory 20mph speed limit over the frontage of the primary school and a further

two VAS do downhill nhill from the school school. Also pro provide ide a central hatched area with coloured surfacing over the length of Sherry Drive from Nevis Avenue to Stewart Avenue.

Chair of South Lanarkshire Council’s Community and Enterprise Committee, Councillor John Anderson, said: “Each option involves the removal of the chicanes with various road safety measures also being introduced.

“We want to hear from people with regards what they think the best option is.

“We have our own thoughts in terms of what will work best at the location, but it’s important that we get feedback before making a decision.

“Engaging with the local community is extremely important to us as a council and I hope as many people as possible take part in the survey and if they can make it, come along to the drop-in event as well.”
