Euro Championsh­ips a winner with crowds

Thousands turn out to watch multi-sport event

Thousands of spectators and competitor­s took to Strathclyd­e Park last week for the inaugural multi- sport European Championsh­ips 2018.

Over 10 days medals were handed out in various sports, including triathlon and rowing at Strathclyd­e Park.

Aquatics saw swimming at Tollcross Internatio­nal Swimming Centre, synchronis­ed swimming at Scotstoun, diving at the Royal Commonweal­th Pool in Edinburgh, and open water swimming at Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park.

Track cycling took place at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow; road cycling in Glasgow city centre, mountain biking at Cathkin Braes and BMX at Glasgow BMX Centre.

Berlin also hosted events, such as gymnastics and athletics.

In total, 1000 athletes took part in 72 medal events over the 10 days. Great Britain did well in the medals table, finishing second to Russia with 74 medals.

This included 26 gold, 26 silver and 22 bronze.

Russia boasted 66 medals total, of which 31 were gold.

A total of 125 athletes took part in three triathlon events at Strathclyd­e Park over three competitio­n days.

GB’S team included Grant Sheldon, but he was forced to pull out through injury.

In the individual event, GB’S Alistair Brownlee missed out on a medal, finishing fourth behind France’s Pierre Le Corre ( gold), Spain’s Fernando Alarza ( silver) and Belgian Marten van Riel.

GB’S Jess Learmonth won silver in triathlon.

Rowing saw 474 athletes compete for 17 medal events over four competitio­n days.

The GB men’s fours won silver, women’s eight won silver and Samuel Mottram won bronze in lightweigh­t men’s single sculls.
