Kay and David wed 60 years

- Stefanie Mccourt

A Strathaven couple celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.

Kay and David Reeks met as students married on August 9, 1958. They have children, Peter and Susan.

David spent his working life in the nuclear industry and took a key role in the design and construction of both Hunterston B and Torness nuclear power stations.

Prior to joining the UK Atomic Energy Authority at Dounreay David undertook two years of National Service, which saw Mr and Mrs Reeks moving home several times during their first few years of marriage.

The couple finally settled in Strathaven in 1967 and Kay became an active member of the local WRVS.

When most people would be settling down to a quieter life, David took retirement as an opportunity to join the charity Edinburgh Direct Aid (EDA) as a volunteer leading aid convoys to destinations including Bosnia, Croatia, Albania, Kosovo and the West Bank.

He is very grateful to Kay for her support under what must have been difficult circumstances, as the convoys were subject to wartime attacks.

In 2015 David received an MBE for his work with EDA and the family travelled with him to Buckingham Palace for his investiture.

David continues to volunteer with EDA and also works as a railway tour manager. and two
