All hands on deck at Hartree Mill

-

More than 80 volunteers helped to get Biggar Rugby Club’s Hartree Mill site ready for the new season as part of RBS/SRU Rugby Force Day.

The hard work started at 9am, with general cleaning and tidying up, sorting, mending, building, painting, plastering, weeding, raking and more going on.

RBS volunteers and SRU personnel such as Glasgow North rugby manager Alex Edmonstone augmented the Biggar members to get stuck in.

No sooner had a number of jobs been completed than another list was started. The the club would like to thank all who helped out.

There were two winners on the day, both of whom took home a signed Scotland shirt. In the under-18 category, Katie Innes beat the rest for her disciplined work in the fitness hut, while Michael Mcconkey won the adult award for his unstinting stint as post-painter.

Early in the afternoon some of Scotland’s biggest names arrived – Stuart Hogg and Huw Jones from the men’s team, and Lana Skeldon and Megan Kennedy from the ladies.

Coaching followed, with all sections of the club were represented, including Lanark Eagles. Although the Scotland stars were scheduled to stay until 3pm, the queue of autograph hunters was more than 50 metres, and they all stayed until the job was done, which the club thanks them for!

There was action on the pitch as well, when National 3 side St Boswell’s arrived for a pre-season friendly.

Played over 4 x 20 minute quarters, Biggar beat an injury-ravaged Boswells side 33-17.

Biggar’s points came from Franko Carossi, Ross Jackson (2), Douglas Notman and Ali Steele. Euan Bogle kicked two conversions, with Davy Reive and Steele notching one each.
