Steven Boyd stepped off Hamilton’s bench on Saturday and within seconds sent a rocket into Motherwell’s net to earn Accies a precious derby win.
The 21- year- old says practising volleys in training on Friday led to his wondergoal – and he knew it was in as soon as he connected with it in the 68th minute.
Now Boyd hopes the goal forces boss Martin Canning to start him in the league game against Celtic in a fortnight.
Boyd is no stranger to wonder goals, having scored a devastating lob against Dundee on August 12 last year, and his strike in a Betfred Cup game against Queen of the South last season was also a cracker.
He says Saturday’s goal is up there with his best, but wants it to mean something.
Boyd said: “Ross Cunningham hit the free-kick off the wall and I’ve just reacted, volleyed it and hit it sweet, right into the top corner.
“I knew it was a goal as soon as it left my foot. As soon as I hit it I saw it go into the top corner.
“We were practising volleys on Friday in training, so that probably helped a bit.
“It was a good goal and we won the game, so hopefully I can start the next game – we’ll see.
“This season I’ve been trying to knuckle down to try and get into the team, get into the starting eleven.
“Hopefully it happens – a goal like won’t hurt my chances.”
