Hope remains for Accies women

-

A last-gasp strike by Kirsty Mcintosh earned Hamilton Accies Women a hard-earned point at Spartans, and maintained their hopes of SWPL1 survival.

Despite being down to 10 for the last 30 minutes, Lori Gardner flicked the ball to Mcintosh and she chipped a delightful shot into the top corner inside stoppage time.

The point felt like a win for Accies, but a defeat for Spartans, who led 2-1 through a penalty after experienced Jade Lindsay was sent off for a head-butt on Spartans captain Alana Marshall.

Drama unfolded at Ainslie Park as Gardner was brought down in the box in 55 minutes, but Lindsay was dismissed for violent conduct in the ensuing melee, before Amy Anderson converted the penalty to put Accies ahead.

Spartans put Accies on the back foot and their lead lasted just 12 minutes before Elena Santoyobrown arrowed a chip into the top corner.

With six minutes remaining, Lauren Grant was adjudged to have fouled Marshall inside the box and Spartans went 2-1 ahead.

The result leaves Accies two points behind Spartans at the foot of the table, with four vital games remaining.

However, assistant coach Bobby Watson says they’re up for the fight.

He said:“we might have an advantage over Spartans in that we managed to escape from this situation last season, while they’ve been used to the other end of the table.

“We had to win big games to get up to this league, and to stay up.”
