Hamilton Advertiser - - ON THE BEAT - Shirley Bartynek

Urgent repair work was carried out in Hamilton last Wednesday (October 31) following a gas leak.

More than 100 calls were logged following a strong smell of gas in the Ferniegair and Hamilton town centre areas.

It could be smelt miles from the site in Old Avon Road, Hamilton, where gas workers were working to repair the damage.

Many commuters travelling to work in Hamilton could smell the gas coming through the vents in their cars as they drove along Duke Street.

One motorist said: “It was really strong and I thought there might have been a problem with my car at first.

“Then the smell followed throughout the town.”

Dan Brown, a spokesperson for gas distribution company SGN, said last week: “We’re working to urgently fix damage to our gas network in Old Avon Road, Hamilton, following reports of a smell of gas in the area.

“Our engineers have located the leak and are carrying out permanent repairs.

“We’ve responded to more than 100 reports of a smell of gas in the area so far, and we’re continuing to carry out safety checks across our network.

“Anyone who can smell gas should contact the national gas emergency number on 0800 111 999.”
