Boost for rape crisis centre
Charity nets £37K
The Hamilton-based Lanarkshire Rape Crisis Centre is to receive a funding boost from the Scottish Government.
As part of the 2018-19 Programme for Government, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced that rape crisis centres across Scotland would receive £1.5 million to support victims of sexual violence.
Rape crisis centres offer free and confidential emotional and practical support, information and advocacy to those who have experienced sexual violence at any time in their lives.
The Lanarkshire centre will receive £37,000 over three years.
Confirming the allocations to 14 centres, Minister for Older People and Equalities, Christina Mckelvie said: “We are committed to preventing and eradicating violence against women and girls.
“A huge part of delivering on that commitment is ensuring that victims of rape or sexual assault are able to come forward and access the right support when they need it.
“The work that rape crisis centres do is invaluable and that is why I am delighted to confirm the distribution to 14 centres.”
Anne Mcguire, manager at the Lanarkshire Rape Crisis Centre, welcomed the news, she said: “We are delighted with the Scottish Government’s announcement of additional funds to support Rape Crisis Centres in Scotland.
“We have already been informed that the Lanarkshire Rape Crisis Centre has been allocated £37,000 per annum over the next three years (to September 2021) to help support services. An additional support worker will be employed by LRCC, and this, in effect, will help to reduce the current waiting time for face to face support.”
