Festive trip for youngsters

-

Children and volunteers at the Burnbank ARCH Autism Carers Group enjoyed a festive day out at Broadlees in Chapelton.

The day, which was funded through a range of donations, allowed 100 youngsters to enjoy an autismfriendly experience as they met Santa.

The ARCH – Autism Resources Co-ordination Hub – was formed following the closure of the panlanarkshire One Stop Shop based in Motherwell, which was managed by Scottish Autism, in May 2016.

The dedicated base was set up in the former Jean Brownlie Centre on Reid Street in the summer of 2017 to offer “a focal point for those working to provide support in relation to autism”.

The group is completely run by volunteers, and aims to reduce isolation, increase the understanding of autism and improve well-being within the autism community.

A group spokesperson said: “Our latest event was our annual Santa trip on Sunday, December 16. For many of our children, Christmas is just so busy and too sensory to visit Santa, but thanks to the autism friendly experience provided by Broadlees in Chapelton, a wonderful group of children had an amazing time!

“Thanks to the generosity of everyone, 100 children were met with an amazing autism friendly experience with informed staff and a modified environment.

“For some children with autism, this was the first time they had the simple pleasure of experiencing Santa.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank them also for providing such caring and supportive memories for all who attended.”

Some funding for the trip came after South Lanarkshire councillors John Ross and Stephanie Callaghan raised sponsorship by taking part in the Hamilten 10k event.
