Stamp club is back for 2019

Members of the Lanarkshir­e Philatelic Society gathered last Friday (January 4) for a meeting.

‘The Committee Entertains’was the order of the day, and entertain they did with a wonderful variety of displays!

The evening was set off by Paul Mcgowan displaying‘covers’which commemorat­ed the use and developmen­t of the postcode; Ken Liddell had an interestin­g show of postcards depicting‘post Boxes’on the Western Isles and on Shetland, and Anne Holmes presented postcards with‘cats in Hats’– the style of the hats denoting countries such as Egypt, China and India.

Terry Woods had a wonderful display of‘scottish Registrati­on Labels’ for sending mail by registered post; Duncan Mcintyre offered a fascinatin­g display of‘american Pre-cancels’, while Raymond Baldock remembered WW1 with some beautifull­y embroidere­d greeting cards sent from the Front.

David Haig confused members with the German text used to describe the beautiful stamp issues of Germany for the years 2016 and 2017.

Andy Napier displayed stamps and large colourful postcards of‘railways in Fiji’, Brian Dow displayed stamps, covers and postcards illustrati­ng the British Antarctic Territory .

The next meeting will be held at Caledonian Bowling Club on Motherwell Road, Hamilton, at 7.30pm on Friday, January 18.

Member Ray Baldock will present his display of Lithuania.

Anyone with an interest in stamps, postal history, postcards, etc, is very welcome to attend.
