Teen amazed after securing record deal

-

An Uddingston teenager has been awarded a record deal after coming second in a Uk-wide competition to showcase new songwriting talent.

Caitlin Agnew (17) was thrilled to be runner-up at the Listen Up Music Songwriter’s Festival in London.

Now her music, which has an easy listening country feel, is available to download online.

Caitlin, a pupil at Cardinal Newman High School, said: “I still can’t believe what has happened.

“It’s mindblowing and I have to pinch myself sometimes. To have my songs recognised on a national stage is all I ever wanted.”

Caitlin, of Viewpark, was one of ten semi-finalists (from more than 2780 entries) for the national competition which champions independent artists trying to break into the music business.

She appeared at the showcase for Scotland and the North East at Edinburgh’s Voodoo Rooms on August 30, then won a place at the London final at the Half Moon, Putney, in November.

Caitlin said: “The theme of the competition was mental health and the slogan ‘I am here.’

“The song I performed, called I Wanna, is about reaching out and needing someone to comfort you during a difficult time. It obviously struck a chord. I’m delighted with my achievement and there has been lots of interest since.

“I’ve been interviewed on local radio and my music is being played all the time.”

Self-taught Caitlin plays guitar, ukulele and keyboards and has appeared locally at Blantyre Music Festival and at Kelvingrove Bandstand in Glasgow.

Her inspiration comes from her proud grandad Jim Agnew, who also plays guitar, and who travelled with her to the final.
