As I grow older I am confused by our relation with the EU.

Recently, we seem to have a problem with migrants to Britain.

If they are genuine asylum seekers they have achieved their goal in France under EU rules.

Mind you, France has not been shown to obey EU rules.

When our dredgers ventured into ‘French’ waters quite legally, French boats took direct action. This didn’t discourage French boats fishing illegally off our south coast.

Those who have a longer memory will remember how the French reacted during the ‘Lamb Wars’ when the Channel ports were blockaded and trucks were set on fire, sometimes with the lambs still inside them.

If they are economic migrants and are non-eu migrants they have no ‘right of access’ to Britain.

I find it difficult to understand why we should wish to ally ourselves to countries like Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain or any of the more recent additions to the EU.

Enough has been said about Greece, but when Italy is running £264bn of bad loans and Spain has only just pulled itself back from the brink, one has to ask why would we want to be allied to such basket cases.

Of course the EU wants to keep us in the EU, as we are a huge contributor to the EU budget, a budget that has never been audited.

What worries me most is that our younger generation wants to remain in the EU. The usual reason is that they wish freedom of movement. This cannot be for employment, in that Spain for example has a youth unemployment rate of 37 per cent and the other attractive countries are not that much better.

Could it be that they wish to protect their cheap gap year, something unknown to young people of my generation.

It was another busy week on the Hamilton Advertiser’s social media pages.

One story that many people commented on was about a charity fundraiser which is being held for fiveyear-old Amelia Mackie.

The Hamilton schoolgirl was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia before Christmas and, ever since, the community has rallied round to raise funds for her. God love her. I hope it all goes well.

Poor wee soul. My heart goes out to you and all your family. How sad is this kind of stuff, such a beautiful, sweet innocent girl going through this. Good thing is though she has a great family behind her that will do everything in their power to make things better for her. Hope your wee one is better soon and thinking of you all at this very hard time.
