Former police superintendenttom Campbell in January 1989 handed in this photograph of Blantyre town gates, which in 1889 were locked at 8.30pm.

In those days, Blantyre only had one road into it and if you were later than 8.30pm you had to prove who you were and where you were going, to strict gatekeepers.
