Supermarket sweeps into town with jobs

-

A new Lidl supermarket will be built in Larkhall, following permission by planning officers at South Lanarkshire Council.

The supermarket first revealed in January last year that it wanted to open a brand new store at the site of the closed Sefton Park Care Home, on Carlisle Road, as part of its ongoing expansion ambitions within the UK.

Construction is estimated to start on site in the spring, with a view to opening the store in 2020.

The multi-million investment will see Lidl build a sustainable store with 1286m² sales area with plans to create up to 25 new jobs.

And the supermarket will feature facilities including an instore bakery, customer toilets and parking for both cars and bicycles.

Lidl UK’S regional head of property, Gordon Rafferty, commented: “We could not be more delighted to have received planning permission, and look forward to getting started on construction.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the local community for their continued support, and very much look forward to opening our doors and offering our fresh, quality, great value products in the not too distant future.”

Lidl has experienced continued growth in Scotland over the years as consumers flock to the supermarket to discover value products – currently sourced from over 60 Scottish suppliers and ranging from quality fruit and vegetables, to dairy and bakery lines.

The refurbishment of the Larkhall store will add to Lidl’s existing store portfolio in the UK of 720, and will form part of the company’s growth plans, which will see it open up to 50 new stores a year across the UK.
