Junior Football round-up

Joy was in the air over Clydesdale at the weekend as Lanark United and Carluke Rovers won their Ardagh Group West of Scotland Cup second round ties.

Rovers’ Eddie Haley raced into the box on a Mark Weir through-ball, but his layoff to Craig Grierson flew narrowly over the bar.

Haley then squared to Kieran Lafferty, who shot straight at the keeper.

That pressure paid off in 26 minutes when Haley and Lafferty combined on the left, with the latter cutting his shot into the far corner of the net.

When live wire Haley was brought down in the box, Weir put Rovers ahead from the spot on the half-hour.

Muirkirk staged a fightback and pulled a goal back through David Edwards, with Scott Steedman levelling for them with 10 minutes to go.

But with five minutes left, super-sub Sean Mckenna pounced to strike a low shot into the net from 20 yards.

On-form United did well against Championship side Kilsyth Rangers to win 3-2.

The League Two leaders were never behind and won through a hat-trick of penalties by Lewis Hill. Kilsyth started well and keeper Gareth Hallford saved from Scott Upton in five minutes.

Ian Watt had a good run in 14 minutes but was brought down for a clear penalty, which Hill converted.

That lead lasted until the 24th minute when Kilsyth were awarded a penalty and Salim Kouider-aissa scored.

The game continued at a frantic pace, with Hallford keeping his side level with an unbelievable save to deny a Kouider-aissa header, knocking the ball up into the air and then catching it.

Joshua Gracie was brought down in the box in 75 minutes and Hill converted from the spot.

Kilsyth levelled again when Drew Wingate headed home from a corner in 79 minutes, but two minutes later he was sent off for a two-footed tackle on Watt.

The winner came in 85 minutes when Hugh Kerr was held back in the box and Hill completed his hat-trick.

Kilsyth’s misery was complete late on when Jon Tully saw a second yellow, reducing them to nine men.
