Five crash out of West Cup

-

Lesmahagow produced one of their best performances of the season but were knocked out of the West of Scotland Cup second round by Premiership side Glenafton.

They have keeper Brian Mcgarrity to thank, as his long-range kick out deceived the ’Gow defence and bounced over keeper Stewart Thomson and into the net.

League Two side Lesmahagow took the lead in 44 minutes when Neil Schoneville played a free kick to Paul Woodlock, whose cross deceived everyone as it went in via a post.

Mick Mccann equalised in 56 minutes and Jonny Mcstay and Woodlock went close to grabbing a winner.

As the game looked to be heading for penalties, Mcgarrity scored the winner for Glens.

Bellshill went down 4-1 at home to Benburb, Jamie Stewart getting their goal, while Ryan Livingston, Ryan Mccrorie, Scott Jarvie and William Mclaren netted for the victors.

Boss Robert Sneddon said:“i thought we were the better team in the first half, but it was frustrating to see so many missed chances. I also thought we had two good penalty claims turned down.”

Shotts lost 5-3 at St Roch’s. Dean Sutherland, Jon Boal and Danny Burns scored for the county side, but a Jordan Logan hat-trick – taking him to 100 for St Roch’s – and a goal by Robert Maguire put the Glasgow side through.

Shotts boss John Mckeown said:“we still have four or five players missing, but that was disappointing through conceding goals and not taking chances.”

Newmains United went ahead twice, but lost 5-3 at home to East Kilbride Thistle.

Michael Barton scored inside 30 seconds and in nine minutes Newmains doubled their lead through Adam Robertson.

Andy Morgan and Jonny Diack levelled for Thistle, before David Banks was upended inside the box, dusted himself down and converted the penalty for a 3-2 lead.

However, Matt Gray levelled for East Kilbride in 72 minutes, Diack bagged his second of the game a minute later, and Paul Byrne rubbed salt in the United wounds by scoring a fifth with a spectacular free-kick.

Newmains co-manager Paul Davies said: “The lads are so disappointed. They gave away three goals through silly free-kicks, but their first-half display was so promising.”

League Two side Thorniewood United crashed out 5-0 away to Kirkintilloch Rob Roy.

The Rabs were ahead through an Alberto Vezza strike at half-time, but the Premiership side showed their class in the second half as another Vezza goal was added to by a William Sawyers double and one from Lee Gallacher.
