Classy Vics boost promotion chances

Blantyre boys move up table with Ardrossan win

-

Blantyre Vics boosted their promotion prospects in League One, as a classy display saw them beat Ardrossan Winton Rovers 4-1 – moving them up two places to sixth.

Nadeem Zeb scored a first-minute opener and Rovers levelled through a Jo Maxwell penalty, but Vics were soon back in front when Zeb was fouled in the box and Dale Jones scored a penalty in 23 minutes.

Zeb made it 3-1 just before halftime, then won a second penalty which was again converted by Jones.

Rovers’ misery was complete when Andy Mcgregor was sent off for collecting a second booking.

Delighted Vics manager John Gibson said: “That’s four games without a defeat.

“Wins like that will help our league position and give us high hopes for the future.”

Royal Albert moved swiftly in midweek to sign Ross Macneil from Carluke and Aidan Meechan from Forth, and both played their part in a 2-1 comeback win over Maryhill at Tilework Park in Stonehouse.

Maryhill took the lead in 60 minutes when Craig Stevenson unleashed a 20-yard screamer.

That was somewhat against the run of play and Mick Neil crossed for Alan Campbell to head in the equaliser.

And after two ‘goals’ were ruled offside, Macneil provided ammunition for Campbell to score a second and take all three points.

Manager Jamie Nesbitt said: “It’s a big win and it gives us some breathing space, but we know there is a long way to go.

“The objective was always to stay in the league and if that form continues I’m sure we will be OK.

“We’re now unbeaten in six, and full credit to the players, as we have been so depleted that I have been on the bench most weeks!” Wishaw snatched a stoppage-time winner against Greenock in a five-goal thriller at the Beltane.

The county side got off the mark in four minutes when Mark Canning scored from a James Coffey corner.

Greenock equalised through Derek Kennedy, and four minutes into the second half they took the lead through Adam Houlihan.

With 15 minutes left the home side levelled when Greenock conceded possession.

Vinnie Mcguire picked it up on the left of the penalty box and took a couple of paces forward before slamming home a shot that the visiting keeper could only palm into the roof of his net.

They grabbed the crucial winner four minutes into stoppage time when Liam O’kane’s cross was flicked on by KB Grant and Mcguire chipped the ball over the stranded keeper to seal the win.

In League Two, Forth Wanderers drew 0-0 at Ardeer Thistle, where home keeper John Brennan was in inspired form, making crucial saves in each half from Warren Grenfell and Euan Scott.
