Come and give it a try

Getting started in women’s rugby at Hamilton couldn’t be easier – you don’t need to have ever played the sport before.

Coach Gordon Lindsay says the teams are very much in the development stage, but hopes for big things in the near future.

For the meantime, people can get involved, learn the sport, meet new friends and become part of an over-arching family network.

He said:“it has been really rewarding for me so far.

“We have a few girls who have been here right from the start, and seeing the difference from when they first started off up until now has been really amazing.

“The fitness levels have been great, they have improved massively, and it’s great credit to the club and themselves for what they have managed to achieve.

“People can get involved by checking out the Instagram page, the contact details are on that, they can contact the club through the website at hamiltonrugbyclub. co.uk, they will see my contact details are on that, and the email address is ladiesrugby@ hamiltonrugbyclub. co.uk.

“Girls can start from primary one, so if they go through a club all the way then that’s a massive achievement in itself, being able to keep them for 18 years.

“All people need to do is come down to the club. We have primary one to primary three who all play together, it’s touch rugby so it’s not contact at that stage.

“They get taught the correct ways with regards to passing and tackling, then you get to S1, S2, under-15, under-16 and they you just move up. The way the system is here is really good.

“Just come along. Don’t worry if you’ve never played before, we will teach you, we will train you, we will teach you how to do it.

“We’re not going to throw you in at the deep end and put you into games straight away – it’s mostly fitness and things like that, so just come along.”

Gordon added: “Training is on a Tuesday and Thursday, that’s all the ladies and the guys.

“Guys’training normally starts at 6.45pm, ladies are at 7pm, and you’re on roughly until about 8.30pm, and clubhouse manager Nick Schaschke has some lovely food on for us. You pay your £1 and you get your food as well.

“Games for ladies are on Sundays, starting from March until the middle of April, then we will have Sevens season, so we’ll take girls to wherever they get invited to.

“The furthest away invitation we’ve had so far is Orkney.

“Hopefully we can eventually get this up to winning titles and things like that.

“This is the first time we’ve really had a competitive ladies’team at Hamilton, so we’re hoping that one day we’ll be up there.

“This is the start of the season, this is the first time we’ve entered the league, so the girls will go out and enjoy it.”
