I CAN BE AN ACCIES HERO

New boy Davies out to end Hamilton’s goals drought

Steven Davies believes he can be a Hamilton hero if he continues the form he has shown in his career.

The 31-year-old signed a short-term deal until the end of this season, with a view to extending it in the summer.

Davies has played for a number of top clubs down south – starting at Tranmere Rovers, and playing for Derby County, Bristol City, Blackpool, Bradford City and Rochdale – before ending up back at Bloomfield Road.

Although he was eligible to play for Blackpool in their game against Portsmouth last weekend, boss Terry Mcphillips agreed to release him so he could sign on at New Douglas Park.

Davies said: “I’ve spoken to a couple of the lads and they haven’t scored enough goals this season. I’ve always managed to score goals, so it’s something I’m looking forward to, and hopefully I can bring some goals with me.

“I’ve never been up here in Scotland before, so I want to come up, hopefully score some goals, and then we’ll sit down and talk again in the summer.

“I’m delighted to be here, and I’m looking forward to it.”

Liverpool-born Davies revealed that it was the sense of being wanted at the club that persuaded him to make the move to Hamilton.

He said: “I spoke to the manager just before Christmas, and all I needed to sort out was my family.

“I’ve got two kids at home and a wife, so it was just to clear it with them, me being up here for most of the week and then getting back home, so once that was all ironed out it was pretty simple.

“The manager’s enthusiasm for the game was what convinced me, and when I spoke to him I felt like he really wanted me to come here.

“It’s always nice to work for someone who is really looking for you, so it’s one of those situations. It’s a new challenge, it’s a great little club, and it’s something I’m really looking forward to.”

Injury hampered Davies’ time at Rochdale and that led to him training with Blackpool for a few months.

During his spell at Rochdale he scored in a 2-2 FA Cup fifth round draw with Spurs in February.

Davies, who was without a club until he got a chance back at Blackpool, explained: “It got to late September and I wasn’t sorted with a club, so I went in training with them for a couple of weeks.

“The manager asked me to sign a short-term deal just for a bit of cover.

“I’ve been training since September, I haven’t missed a day, so if the manager picks me I’ll be ready.”
