Castle talks continuing
The future of Strathaven’s historic castle remains in the balance despite “positive talks.”
A three-year battle to save the landmark rumbled on following safety fears over concrete slabs falling from the popular castle back in 2016.
This led to South Lanarkshire Council (SLC) carrying out emergency repairs, and they have since been forced to carry out remedial work on several occasions, including cordoning off popular paths and dog-walking routes.
Last year, a partnership between SLC and Strathaven Community Council formed in a bid to reach a funding agreement for the famous structure with Historic Environment Scotland.
Following further talks last week the future of the building still hangs in the balance, but the community councillors remain positive that they are making progress.
Secretary Les Hoggan told the Advertiser: “there has really been two phases for us.
“Firstly, the safety issues, and secondly to make sure the castle is preserved.
“Where we are now is that we want to be able to come up with a way to permanently access the grounds, but not the castle.
“We have had positive talks with the council about doing that.
“All the talks with South Lanarkshire Council and Historic Environment Scotland have been positive, it’s just about getting the funding in place.
“Once it is safe again we will be opening a public consultation to discuss fundraising for the castle.
“The goal for us long-term is to have ‘managed ruin’status with Historic Environment Scotland.”
SLC’S head of Property Services, Frank Mccafferty, added:“the council is continuing discussions with Historic Environment Scotland regarding the practicalities of carrying out the proposed works to Strathaven Castle with a view to securing planning consent. At present there are no firm timescales for commencement of the works, however the council continues to engage with the community council on the project.”
