Grant keeps Heart of Africa beating

Lotto cash boost for cultural group

-

A Hamilton community group are dancing their way into the New Year thanks to a National Lottery cash boost.

Heart of Africa, who deliver dance and cooking activities to promote cultural awareness, have been awarded £8176.

The group will use the money to further connect ethnic groups in the area.

Heart of Africa performed at various groups throughout the area during 2018, including an event at Hillhouse and Earnock Community Centre, where they brought the community together with their dance moves.

They also cooked up a tasty lunch at Larkhall and District Volunteering Group (LDVG).

Sandra Mccrory, funding and marketing coordinator at LDVG, said: “It was really interesting to learn about the differences between Scottish cooking and African cooking.

“The food was delicious. We are excited to see what we can do together next “.

Also on the receiving end of a cash boost from the Lottery was Stonehouse Senior Citizens Pavilion, who picked up £6500.

The group will use the money to reduce social isolation through a programme of activities for their elderly members – including summer day trips, dinner dances and visits to the theatre.

All of the cash comes from National Lottery Awards for All Scotland, which provides grants of between £500 and £10,000.

A spokesperson said: “This is National Lottery money making a real impact in communities across the country. We wish them all the best for the year ahead as they to put their plans into action.”

National Lottery Awards for All Scotland is open to applications on a rolling basis and can be received at any time. To find out what it could do for your community visit www.biglotteryfund.org.uk/ awardsforallscotland or phone 0300 123 7110.
