Biggar have a hand on title

-

Biggar Rugby Club are within touching distance of the Tennent’s National League 2 title following a thrilling 12-10 win over Highland in Inverness.

That result saw Stewart’smelville leapfrog Highland into second place, with Biggar 16 points ahead of them.

Highland are third, 17 points behind Biggar, but with two games in hand over the top two.

A partially frost-covered new 3G pitch in Inverness made conditions difficult for both sides, particularly with regard to handling.

Both clubs fielded strong sides, meaning the scene was perfectly set for a top-of-thetable clash, the result of which could determine promotion places if not the championship itself.

Having played strongly to repel the first Highland foray, Biggar opened the scoring with a very typical Conor Lavery try, the stand-off’s angled run taking him through the defence, with Matthew Stewart adding the conversion.

Biggar scored their second try after just eight minutes with a lung-busting run in from winger Ross Bradford, who latched on to a loose pass from Highland stand-off Iain Chisholm and ran almost the length of the pitch to cross in the corner.

Euan Bogle pulled his conversion attempt across the posts, but Biggar led 12-0.

It might have looked like plain sailing at that point, but Highland had other ideas, with their forward line taking lineouts and disrupting Biggar’s with just as much ease, which pushed the visitors
