Womanjailed after highspeed cop chase
A woman involvedin ahigh-speed police chase has beenjailed for eight months andbanned from driving for 12 years.
Hamiltonsheriff court heard Deborah cameronwas arrested after being pursued through Bellshill and motherwell.
cameron (36),ofstoneylee road, cumbernauld, admitted driving dangerously, while disqualified and while unfit through drink or drugson november 8.
Atone point she kept going after spinning across the road, mounting the pavementand crashing intoa fence. She also droveon the wrong side of the road, narrowly missing other cars.
Police tracked her from north road and crossgates, Bellshill, to Bellshill road, Parkneuk Street, Logans road and Ailsa crescent, motherwell.
She droveoff atspeed innorth road and didn’thavelights on even thoughit was dark.
While police were in pursuit, her vehicle spun outof control on Bellshill road, veering across the carriageway, mounting the pavementand crashing intoa fence.
cameron continued to driveat excessivespeed, turning into Logans road andinto the path of oncoming vehicles, only narrowly avoiding hitting them.
charges alleging that she shouted abuse at police officers, gave them false details and failed to provide a urine sample were dropped.
cameron has a long list of previousconvictions,including for driving while disqualified.
Sentence had been deferred foran assessmentof her suitability for a drug treatmentand testing order.
Defenceagent mark Lutton said his client was“very anxious”to participate in the scheme.
However, Sheriff Allanmckay said it appeared drug workers were “not confident”cameron could handle the programme ,which involves regular drug tests.
cameron had spent six weeks in custody after her arrest and was granted bail shortly before christmas.
However, Sheriff mckay said the onlyappropriate sentence was another spell behind bars.
He said that it would have been longer, but for her early guilty plea.
cameron has also been ordered to resit her test before driving again.
