Lanark sitting pretty at top of League 2

-

Lanark United’s impressive 14game winning run in Mcbookie. com League 2 came to an end on Saturday as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Lesmahagow – but they’re still on an excellent unbeaten run.

Lewis Hill opened the scoring from an early penalty, and United had several chances to add to their lead, with brilliant goalkeeping by Sandy Thomson keeping them at bay.

Lesmahagow levelled in 39 minutes when a corner caused havoc in the Lanark box, and Neil Schoneville slammed the ball into the net from close range.

’Gow could have won the game in 76 minutes when PJ O’donnell conceded a penalty, Mark Weir took it, but Gareth Hallford produced a brilliant save to deny him.

Lanark also could have won it, but Cammy Lawson hit the post from a corner in the last minute.

The result keeps Lanark eight points clear of second-placed ’Gow, who have two games in hand.

Thorniewood United and Forth Wanderers both maintained respectable mid-table positions as they each put four goals past Ardeer Thistle and Saltcoats Vics, respectively.

Thorniewood returned from North Ayrshire with a convincing win thanks to goals from Damon Welsh, Gary Stewart, Paul O’brien and Chris Dunlop.

Similarly, Forth sent Saltcoats back to Ayrshire empty handed, as goals from Andrew Skinner, Liam Ferguson, Redouane Boulbrachene and Euan Scott gave them three good points.

Struggling Newmains United were dealt a blow as Muirkirk rattled five goals past them without reply.

Newmains don’t have problems to seek and injuries to James Lafferty and Paul Donaghy eventually left them with 10 men, as David Edwards’s hat-trick was added to by strikes from Keenan Mcvey and Jordan Conlon. Three of the goals were scored in the last 10 minutes.
