South Lanarkshir­e Council Leader John Ross came under some fierce criticism over the tweet he posted at the weekend.

As the story emerged online, many of our readers were quick to comment.

Colin John Mitchell posted: “Perhaps he should spend more time sorting out the mess which is Hamilton Town Centre, which is a shambles.”

David Cunning said: “Shocking behaviour from a person in a position that he is in. Poor show.

“He has let himself and Lanarkshir­e down.”

Graham Moody called for him to stand down as council leader, saying: “Resign, there’s no way you can stay in that job now.”

Nancy Skelton offended by this.”

And she added: “He needs sacked now.”

Tommy Mcphee commented: “If he is not sacked he should resign.”

Lelly Bee said: “Is this to be the way forward?”

Kenny Mackie said: “He should be sacked – if council staff did the same they would be sacked.”

Anne Grogan posted: “It isn’t good enough, he should be fired.”

Scott Hunter wrote: “Forget resigning. He should be sacked!”

And @Realchrist­inemc took to Twitter to express her anger on the matter.

She tweeted: “Your comment was unacceptab­le. And now this tweet smacks of insincerit­y.

“How could your unionist constituen­ts believe that you would act in their best interests when you hold views like that.

“You should stand down as leader of the council.”

But the council leader’s tweet has divided many, and some of our readers backed him.

Jackie Mcauley said: “Brilliant.” Garry Taylor added: “I kinda like this guy!”

Michael Pettit wrote: “Legend!” Sean Mcseveny also praised him, saying: “Hero!”

Will Leathem also commented: “What happened to free speech? It’s a cheeky banner at an independen­ce rally.

“What did you expect? Pictures of Boris wrapped in the Union flag? Deary me.”

James Brittle said: “Well done big chap, my words exactly! No need to apologise, freedom of speech!”
