Speakers are talk of the town

-

Hamilton Speakers Club met last Thursday in Ferniegair Hall for another eclectic round of discussion.

President Colin Jones welcomed the audience and handed the gavel to Tom Mccabe, who was chairing the evening.

Sylvia Davidson talked about how TV heroes can become real, referencing how talking car KITT, from TV show Knight Rider, used satellite navigation.

John Jardine, in similar theme, noted that some works of fiction have, in due course, become fact. He spoke about George Orwell’s seminal novel 1984 and the universal translator from TV show Star Trek.

Lynette Jardine described a recent holiday to Port Patrick. She also talked about seeing Girvan and Ballantrae by boat, and a trip to Stranraer.

And May Stewart challenged the audience to discuss blaming for parents for raising unruly children, whether we are becoming a more tolerant society, whether should we fly less because of climate change, and whether parking fees pay for the repairs needed to Hamilton Mausoleum.

Hamilton Speakers Club is the oldest organisation of its kind that meets in Lanarkshire and lets people speak in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.

It will meet in Ferniegair Hall at 7.30pm on most Thursdays, through until March 2020.
