Hamilton Accies have launched an investigation after a schoolgirl was hit by a firework near the stadium.

Police rushed to the scene in the Morrisons superstore car park, Newpark Street, on Tuesday, November 5.

The youngster was taken to University Hospital Wishaw for treatment.

Hamilton Accies were holding a fireworks display in their stadium, and the club have launched an investigation to determine if they were responsible.

The club’s chief executive Colin Mcgowan said: “First and foremost, we are sorry to hear that the young girl was injured. Our display is done with the best of intentions and with the most stringent of safety measures. We absolutely hope she is okay.

“We are, of course, fully co-operating with the police and we have launched an investigation into the matter to establish if indeed the firework involved was launched from our display.”

He continued: “This is the fifth year we have organised such a display and we are fully licenced to the highest degree of safety precautions to ensure nothing like this ever occurs.

“We have three stations within the stadium where we let the fireworks off from, with two operatives at each in hi-vis vests, goggles, gloves and with buckets of water and sand.

“We also only use fixed upward projectories that fire the fireworks safely into the air.

“It goes without saying that if it is found to be a firework from our display, we will wholeheartedly apologise.”

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “At 7.40pm on November 5, officers were called to reports of an 11 yearold girl having been injured by a firework within a car park on Newpark Street, Hamilton.

“Emergency services attended and the girl was taken to University Hospital Wishaw to be treated for burns. No criminality has been established.”
