Cameron soars clear of rivals
East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow became one of the SNP’S safest seats as Lisa Cameron was re-elected.
A near 70 per cent turnout helped Dr Cameron to a 13,322 majority over Labour candidate Monique Mcadams.
Conservative candidate Gail Macgregor came third – less than 1000 votes behind Labour – while Lib Dem candidate Ewan Mcrobert celebrated more than doubling their vote in fourth.
Green candidate Erica Bradley-young was fifth, ahead of UKIP’S David Mackay.
Around 30 ballots were identifiably spoiled by SNP supporters who could not vote for Dr Cameron.
Re-elected with the biggest majority in South Lanarkshire, Dr Cameron said: “What a fabulous team we have had across this constituency, thank you so much.
“You were tireless in your work to ensure that East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow remained SNP – and boy has it remained SNP.
“Representing this constituency where I grew up is the most amazing privilege of my life.
“Thank you for placing Scotland’s future in Scotland’s hands today by voting SNP, a clear message to Boris Johnson – he cannot take Scotland for granted.”
Labour candidate Ms Mcadams said it was an “interesting” result both locally and nationally.
She said: “I think I’m speechless – which isn’t something I would normally say.
“Do I think it’s the right decision for this constituency? Absolutely not, I really don’t.
“Nationally, people are going to have to a really long hard look at themselves – we’re talking UK and we’re talking Scotland.” Full result
