Strathaven’s annual reindeer day celebrations beat the weather last Sunday as crowds braved the wind and rain to welcome Santa and his friends.

Strong winds and heavy rain on Saturday and Sunday morning caused some disruption to the event, but didn’t dampen spirits as the team from the Cairngorm Reindeer

Centre pulled Santa’s sleigh and led the parade around the town.

Residence Estate Agents on Green Street played host to Santa’s Grotto on the day. The estate agent was transformed into the grotto and welcomed children and families before the parade around the Common Green.

Following the procession, the lights on the Christmas tree and new lights in the Common Green were officially switched on, lighting up Strathaven for Christmas.

Winners of the reindeer day poster competition were: Lower School – Bonnie Mcmann (P3, Chapelton Primary) and Rory Anderson (P7, Glassford Primary).

Auldhouse & Chapelton Community Council held their monthly meeting last week.

Before the meeting, cheques were presented to the various local groups who had successfully applied for funding from the Micro Grants Scheme administered by the community council on behalf of the South Lanarkshire Council.

Funds went to Chapelton Primary

School, Chapelton Bowling Club, Chapelton Indoor Bowling Club, South Lanarkshire Care and Repair Scheme and Silver Circle for projects as diverse as the creation of a garden area outside Chapelton Primary, Christmas dinners for local residents and equipment to help maintain the local bowling green grounds and hedges.

The council thanked all the representatives for coming along and accepting their cheques.

And the council say they still have pending applications from Auldhouse Primary for a literary project involving the whole village including booking a professional story teller.

There are still funds available and the council are inviting local groups with a specific project to apply for funding. For details, email alastaircampbell95@ gmail.co.uk.
