Hamilton District Foodbank has said a huge thank you to two of their hard-working volunteers.

Linda Smith and Barbara Catt have worked tirelessly all year to help raise funds at various events across Lanarkshire for the charity and their work hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Hamilton District Foodbank manager Isobel Graham told the Advertiser: “We would like to say a big thank you to Linda and Barbara for all their hard work this year in raising funds for the foodbank.

“They have raised over £1300 alone since May of this year. In fact the latest event was on Saturday, December 14, at a static cycle event in the Regent Way Shopping Centre in Hamilton.

“We are very grateful for their continued support and of course to everyone else who gets involved by either volunteering or indeed supporting our fundraising events. Thank you all.”

The foodbank welcomes any new offers of help with funding. You can find out more at hamiltondistrict. foodbank.org.uk

A Hamilton boxing club have made a knock-out gesture in a bid to save lives.

Bravehearts Boxing Gym have shown they really have big-hearts after raising enough cash to have a defibrillator installed outside their club.

Based on Low Waters Road, the club were given the go-ahead by the National Defibrillator Network and the Scottish Ambulance Service to have their life-saving device positioned outside the club, making it accessible to all.

Now that it is online, 999 call handlers will be able to direct members of the public to the cabinet and provide the code needed to access the defib.

Steven Mcmillan, who has been owner of the gym for five years, explained: “We’ve had the defib in the gym for a few years now but we wanted to make it accessible to all.

“My mother passed away 13 years ago after suffering from a heart attack and my dad has also taken a heart attack too and he stays next door to the gym.

“I just feel if the defib was made accessible to all then it could really make a difference.

“Over the years the gym have raised lots of cash for various charities and we raised cash this year again, but some of it was used to have the defib registered and placed in a special box outside, and members have really kicked in to do so.

The defibrillator is designed to be used by someone with absolutely no medical knowledge. It gives verbal instructions on what to do and you cannot harm someone by using it on them. There are about 3500 outof-hospital cardiac arrests in Scotland every year in which resuscitation is attempted – but only one person in 12 survives.
