Rugby is back in 2020

Biggar Rugby Club will attempt to strengthen their grip on the top of Tennent’s National 1 as the second half of the rugby season gets underway this Saturday, January 11.

They travel to bottom side Dundee HSFP, and are currently 10 points clear of Heriot’s, who play third-placed Highland.

Hamilton host Preston Lodge in National League 2, who hold a 10-point lead over the Bulls in fifth place.

Hamilton are eighth in the 12-team National 2, and will hope to make up some ground on Newton Stewart, who hold an eight-point lead, while stretching the gap on the bottom four.

West League 2 leaders Strathaven take on basement scrappers Uddingston, while third-placed Dalziel take on Paisley, who are nine points behind them.

Dalziel are eight points behind Strathaven, but with two games in hand.

Lanark will hope for a fourth win of the season as they entertain Isle of Mull in West League 3.

Games kick-off at 2pm. Meanwhile, Biggar Rugby Club have announced a programme of events over the coming weeks, aimed at raising funds for their proposed clubhouse extension.

They are bringing‘trail West’to the Municipal Hall on Friday, January 17, and tickets are £15 from Al Stewart or online through Eventbrite.

Biggar Rugby Club’s annual Burns Supper and Ceilidh is at the Municipal Hall on Friday, January 31. Cost is £25, names to Al Stewart, and to be paid on the night.

The club’s over-35s match against Peebles will be followed by a dinner in the clubhouse on Friday, February 21. The game kicks off at 6.30pm.

A Biggar team assembled and sponsored by Davy Reive won the Kilmarnock Touch Rugby event on January 2, which was a fundraiser for the My Name’s Doddie Foundation.

Bolstered by Scotland Sevens star Robbie Ferguson, Biggar win several pool games and then a close-fought final with nearneighb­ours East Kilbride.
