Hamilton Accies lead the way as tributes to Liam pour in

Tributes have been paid to former Hamilton Accies youth player Liam Scott after he died in a tragic accident last week.

Hundreds of heartfelt messages have been posted across social media to the popular footballer who most recently was playing for The New Bellshill Athletic FC.

The 18-year-old, who has family in Bothwell and Uddingston, passed away after falling into the water at the Falls of Clyde, near Lanark, on Thursday evening.

Emergency services raced to the scene and tried to save the former Braidhurst High pupil but his body was tragically found near Corra Linn the following day.

Football clubs across the country were keen to show their support to his mum Pauline, dad Willie, brother Harry and sister Lara following his death, with Hamilton Accies leading the tributes last weekend.

On the club’s Facebook page they posted said:“the club are dreadfully sad to learn of the untimely passing of Bellshill Athletic player Liam Smith, 18, who was in our academy for six years before leaving last summer.

“He tragically died on Thursday evening. Our thoughts are with his family and friends just now.”

Liam left Accies last season after six years at the club. His current club, The New Bellshill Athletic FC, were devastated by the news and said in a statement:“everyone connected with the club were devastated to hear the news yesterday of the tragic accident which has claimed such a young life.

“Liam Scott was only with us for last season but had such an impact on and off the field.

“Thoughts and prayers are with Willie, Pauline, Lara, Harry and all of his extended family and friends at this very sad time. Rest in peace.”

Celtic Football Club also paid tribute to the teenager on their Twitter. It read:“we are saddened to hear of the tragic passing of Liam Scott. Everyone at the club sends their prayers of condolence to his family and friends. YNWA Liam.”

Liam’s former club Holytown Colts also posted a message of condolence.

The 2011 team said:“the 2011s would like to express their deepest condolence­s to Willie, Pauline, Harry and Lara. No words can express what you are going through. He will never be forgotten, once a colt, always a colt. All our prayers and thoughts are with you all.”

And Yoker Athletic added: “Everyone at the club would like to pass on our condolence­s to the family and friends of Liam. A tragic loss of a young life. RIP young man.”

Hundreds of Liam’s friends and former teammates also took to social media to pay their respects with many describing him as“a talented footballer”and a“fine young man”.
