Covid-19 numbers

- STEPHEN BARK

Coronavirus deaths in South Lanarkshire remained static last week.

Two weeks after recording the highest number of coronavirus deaths in Scotland, South Lanarkshire recorded five deaths for the second week running – the third largest in the country.

Figures released by the National Records of Scotland on Wednesday, June 24, revealed the joint-lowest number of Covid-19 related deaths since the first three deaths were recorded in the area in the week ending March 29. Only Glasgow (nine) and Edinburgh (six) recorded a higher number of Covid-19 related deaths than South Lanarkshire last week.

Deaths in care homes increased by one to three, while the other two occurred in the region’s hospitals.

That brings the total number of coronavirus deaths in South Lanarkshire to 305 of which 139 were in care homes, 136 were in hospital and 30 were in other settings including at home.

Neighbouring North Lanarkshire recorded its lowest level of weekly deaths at three - one of which occurred in the region’s care homes.

A revision in the data provided by the National Records of Scotland shows that three deaths were recorded in North Lanarkshire for the previous week as well and not four as previously reported.

As a result, there have been 263 deaths where coronavirus was listed on the death certificate in North Lanarkshire.

Of those, 92 were in care homes, 148 in hospital and 23 were in other settings including at home.

That takes the total number of coronavirus deaths in Lanarkshire to 568 as of Sunday, June 21.

Lanarkshire as a whole remains the second-worst affected health board in Scotland with 8.6 deaths for every 10,000 people, only Greater Glasgow and Clyde has seen a higher death rate (11.1).

Only Lothian (708) and Greater Glasgow and Clyde (1,316) have seen a higher number of coronavirus deaths than Lanarkshire although the death rate in Lothian is only 7.8 because of the bigger population.

Last week was the eighth consecutive week in which coronavirus deaths in Scotland decreased. There were 49 across the country bringing the total to 4,119.

More than three-quarters (77 per cent) were aged 75 or over while 47 per cent of deaths occurred in care homes.

The figures include all deaths up to Sunday, June 21.
