MURDER BID

Victim, 67, in ‘serious’ condition after attack on doorstep

- LEONA GREENAN

Police launched an attempted murder investigation this week after a 67-year-old man was attacked at his home in Larkhall.

The incident is said to have happened at around 11.25pm on Friday, February 11.

Officers say that when the man opened the door to his Machanhill home he was attacked by two men, who then threw an unknown substance in his face.

Emergency services attended and the victim was taken to Wishaw General where he was being treated for his injuries and remained in a serious condition.

Police are treating the incident as attempted murder and have been in attendance at the house since the early hours of Saturday, and tape was still in place around the property and garden this week.

A neighbour raised concerns after reports locally of “blood all over the place”.

They told the Advertiser: “All we know is that an elderly couple live in the house and that they haven’t been at the property since Saturday morning.

“The police have been sat outside every day and the house was still taped off this morning (Tuesday) when I left for work.”

Another neighbour said: “It’s been very quiet round here.

“I hadn’t even heard about an incident until Sunday, then I saw the police forensics team there and the house taped off.

“All I know is there was some sort of commotion late on Friday night on the man’s doorstep, that’s all I know.”

Detective Inspector Susie Cairns said: “We are working to establish the full circumstances of this attack and the reason for it.

“A man has been left seriously injured and it’s imperative we trace the men responsible. I am appealing to anyone who was in the area around the time of the incident to contact us with any information.”

The two men are believed to have run off in the direction

of Field Road in the town and were last seen walking on Hareleeshill Road towards John Street.

The first suspect was wearing a dark coloured medium-length jacket.

He had a hood up, but it’s not clear if the hood belonged to the jacket or if he was wearing a hooded top.

He was wearing white trainers and carrying a white carrier bag.

The second suspect was dressed all in black, also with his hood up.

At the time of the attack at least one of the suspects is thought to have been wearing a surgical type face mask.

Officers have been carrying out door-to-door enquiries and are continuing to review relevant CCTV footage for any additional information on the suspects

DI Cairns added: “We know the suspects were walking up Hareleeshill Road towards John Street, so I would ask any motorists with dash cams who were in those locations to check the footage and pass on any images which could assist our ongoing investigation.

“All information is vital as we piece together the motive for this attack.”

A police presence will continue in the area with additional officers on patrol for community reassurance.

Anyone with concerns can approach and speak with these officers.

Anyone with any information in relation to the incident is asked to contact police on 101. Or information can be left anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
