Hamilton climb table with a first win in six

HAMILTON ACCIES .............................. 1 MORTON ............................................... 0 Hamilton boss Stuart Taylor says patience was the key to a “thoroughly deserved win” over Morton.

Lewis Spence’s 46th-minute strike was enough to separate the sides on Saturday and take Accies back up to sixth in the Championship table.

It was Hamilton’s first win in six games, and Morton’s first defeat in seven, since Accies legend Dougie Imrie took over at Cappielow in December.

Taylor was delighted with the win and said: “I’m really happy with the win, happy to get the clean sheet, and happy with how we went about our job.

“The work-rate was brilliant, in possession I thought we did really well against a really well-organised and welldrilled back five, and we were ruthless in front of goal as well.

“In every game we go into we try to get the three points. We thoroughly deserved the win today and it’s nice to get the three points.

“It was a very good strike. We spoke about the intensity we needed to play at in the game, and it was difficult.

“Morton came and tried to slow things down and it was important that we kept that intensity up, which we did.

“I think patience was the key, and that slots will open for us to play through.

“I said to them to keep doing what they were doing but be a bit tidier, and Spenny got his rewards.

“It was great work from [Kieran] Macdonald and [Kai] Kennedy to open up the opportunity for him to go and finish it, but it was a good strike.

“We had been on a really good run, we had gone up to Arbroath who are top of the league and outwith two penalties we kept a clean sheet. It was good to go and get the win against the team who are the best in the league, in terms of their form.”

Goal hero Spence said: “It was vital that we got three points because we’ve been doing well but haven’t been getting the praise for it.

“I felt we were in control but maybe not threatening them as much as we’d like with the ball. I know the fans were getting on our back a wee bit because we were maybe playing it a bit at the back.

“We don’t just turn up and do what we want. We get told what to do. I know they maybe don’t see it like that sometimes because they want goals, action, but we work on a lot of things.

“Morton have a lot of big boys, so I thought the back four did really well with that, and to get a clean sheet also.”
