Grant sees off Matthews and sets sights on Scottish title

- ANDY MCGILVRAY

Hamilton boxer Jordan Grant says he went back to basics to beat Harry Matthews, and has set his sights firmly on the Scottish light-heavyweight title.

Grant, 24, won on points by 40-36 against his 33-year-old Yorkshire opponent at Trump Turnberry during Fightzone Fight Night, and says it will open doors for him in the near future.

The Priestfield boxer says there are plenty of sacrifices that go along with the sport, but says nights like those are what make it all worthwhile.

He said:“i’m happy with the whole thing. We went in with a plan and the intention of carrying it out and we did what we needed to do and got the result.

“I controlled the full fight. We said this time round that we would get back to basics, stick to boxing, and it definitely worked. He didn’t really have a look in with me, I dominated the fight.

“Harry did have a couple of spells where he did show he’s still got it, there were certain parts of it where you could tell he’s very experienced, but I think I was just too much for him.

“But I’ve got here because I’ve earned it. People don’t see all the sacrifice.

“The days when you’re finishing work, going straight to the gym, and you’re not getting in until 10pm.

“I sacrifice every weekend to train, I don’t get to see my daughter and stuff, so when you get nights like those, or the nights that are coming, then it makes it all worthwhile.”

Boxing at Trump Turnberry in Ayrshire has given Jordan a taste of the big time that he wants to continue.

He added:“the whole experience was brilliant – that’s one to tick off and a place you’ve got to experience.

“Opponent-wise it was probably a step up, but there are still bigger fights to come. This year I want to win the Scottish title, so hopefully this sets me on the path to that, and I’m open to domestic fights as well.”

It looks likely that Grant will next be fighting in April, as he added:“i’m hoping to be fighting in seven weeks at Braehead Arena and I’m looking forward to that. That’s a huge event again.

“I’m back in the gym now preparing for that – there’s no rest for the wicked!”
