Feedback on bike route

- SHANNON MILMINE

A survey has been launched for South Lanarkshire residents to offer feedback on the council’s active travel project.

It has been created to seek local opinions on improvements to the NCN74 Uddingston to Bothwell cycle route.

Funding to improve the route has been supplied by Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) and Sustrans’“places for Everyone”project which is funded by Transport Scotland.

The existing route through Uddingston will remain in its existing alignment, but Station Road in Bothwell will be realigned to create a new route to connect to Strathclyde Country Park which will cross the Raith Interchange.

Current design options include enhancing travel and infrastructure in Uddingston and Bothwell to create a more direct and safer route for cyclists and pedestrians when walking between the two towns.

Funding was granted to progress the design of the improvements and realignment of this route, and the council is looking for local views on the proposals.

Improvement designs include adding cycle lane priority junctions where cyclists take priority over cars, pavement widening and adding improved signage along the length of the route.

Local community groups will be involved in the process to improve the route with floral displays, local art features and an improved gateway for cyclists and pedestrians into Uddingston train station.

Travelling actively can deliver a range of benefits to the local area including healthier citizens, better connected communities, reduced traffic congestion and better air quality.

The council wants to improve the route to make walking and cycling an attractive choice for people to make their everyday journeys. The public consultation is open until March 6, and you can search for‘active travel projects’on the council’s website.
