Brew lives in a house like this?
Site that previously made ale could become a home
Plans to convert a B-listed brewery in Strathaven into a home have been submitted to South Lanarkshire Council.
Proposals have been received by the local authority to convert the Craig Mill microbrewery into a residence. The brewery previously made Strathaven Ales.
The plans will see the centuries-old building being converted into a fourbedroom home.
Craig Mill was built in the 1600s and has been altered over the years; the mill was converted into a micro-brewery in 1995.
Plans include elevational changes while still retaining the historic character of the building and not harming its significance.
The proposal states: “No demolition is proposed and most of the changes entail added works rather than any removal of the historic equipment and fabric. The impact of changes on the setting have been minimised by siting the new dormer windows on the inconspicuous frontage of the River Avon, where it will have no impact on public views, particularly on the principal approach from the Strathaven Road.”
Craig Mill, as it is now known, is understood to have originally been built in the 1600s and was altered over the following years with the addition of an undershot water wheel extension, and it was rebuilt around 1825.
The proposal continues: “The mill is of heritage significance for its historic and architectural value, although the importance of its component parts varies.”
No external features of the building will be altered, but changes and improvements are proposed internally with the installation of water-saving restrictions, 100 per cent lowenergy light fittings and high-performance natural insulation.
All of the existing machinery will be retained inside and carefully integrated into the proposed room layouts, which will provide interesting features with the rooms.
Within the renovated residential unit, there will be four bedrooms and three bathrooms on the upper floor, a sitting room, dining room and kitchen on the ground floor and space for a gym, cinema or office, a sauna and shower room on the lower floor.
The application was received on January 30 and the deadline for determining plans is April 7.
Neighbourhood consultation began on February 9 and will end on March 2 and standard consultation began on February 9 and ended today (February 23).
