Lanark swim duo in the medals at Tollcross

- ANDY MCGILVRAY

Lanark Amateur Swimming Club duo Evi Mackie and Craig Shaw won seven medals between them at the West District Group 2 Long Course Championships at Tollcross International Swimming Centre in Glasgow.

In doing so, they earned six qualifying times and three consideration times for the Scottish National Championships in April.

Evi Mackie won five medals and the 14-year-old broke two female club records – Victoria Gourlay’s 2009 100m butterfly, and Ailsa Mcnab’s 2010 800m freestyle.

Mackie won four District titles in 50m backstroke, 100m butterfly, 400m individual medley and 800m freestyle, and was second in 100m freestyle.

Craig Shaw, 15, shattered his personal best time to win the 100m breaststroke title in a time of 1.13.02, and took bronze on the Saturday in 200m breaststroke. Shaw also finished fifth in 200m IM.

Other top-six finishes in the 15 and over group came from Abbie Barnstaple who was fourth in 200m butterfly;katie Towers was fourth in 200m breaststroke, fifth in 100m breaststroke and sixth in 200m IM.

Caitlyn Hamilton was sixth in 50m backstroke.

Ian Henderson set new personal best times in both his breaststroke events.

Sunday saw the club’s five junior swimmers in action, with Evi Mackie winning her four events.

Emily Taylor, 11, was fifth in 100m butterfly, 200m backstroke, 50m freestyle, and sixth in 100m freestyle in the 11/12 age group.

Both Taylor and Mackie set new personal best times in all their swims, as did Imogen Siebers, Lucy Taylor and

Orlaith Jeffrey.

Coach Karen Kelly said: “It was another good weekend for the club at Tollcross. The swimmers secured six qualifying and three consideration times for the Nationals in April, and in total posted 25 new personal best times.

“The stand-out swim was Craig Shaw’s 100m breaststroke – he is a pretty laid-back boy, and wasn’t favourite to win, but he stormed to victory.

“Evi’s 800m freestyle was also an outstanding swim.

“The 11-13 year-olds gained vital experience of swimming long course too.”

Lanark ASC swimmers will take part in the North Ayrshire 200 Meet in Irvine next weekend.
