Star baker Sarah wins top award
A Hamilton woman has won a prestigious Prince’s Trust award after battling depression, anxiety and OCD and starting her own baking business.
Sarah Garvin, 29, has been named the winner of the RBS Enterprise Award at The Prince’s Trust and TK Maxx & Homesense Awards, which recognise young people who have succeeded against the odds, improved their chances in life and had a positive impact on their local community.
After being diagnosed with depression, anxiety and OCD in her teens, Sarah overcame these challenges to start her own successful baking business, Cake ‘n’ Bake.
She said: “I have been on a real journey with both my business and with The Prince’s Trust, which makes receiving the Enterprise Award all the more special.
“I feel incredibly proud of what I’ve managed to achieve and it’s great to be recognised for my hard work.
“My diagnosis has been so liberating and I’m keen to use my experience to raise awareness of ADHD and show that it doesn’t define or limit you – you can still do amazing things.
“I’m thankful for what I was able to learn with The Trust, which has got me where I am today.”
After starting Cake ‘n’ Bake, Sarah realised she needed help learning how to run her own business and decided to approach the Trust to take part in the Enterprise programme.
She said: “The course covered practical things such as marketing and pricing and I was also given oneto-one support with my business plan and funding application which I found really valuable as I was worried about doing this on my own.”
Sarah now has her own unit, which she bakes from full-time and is also open twice a week for takeaway cakes, cookies and coffee.
