A popular restaurant in Strathaven has been named the best in Scotland at a national curry awards.

The 1st Nation’s Curry Awards 2023 – which celebrate the best curry houses and chefs across the United Kingdom – took place at a glittering ceremony last month at the Mercure Manchester Piccadilly Hotel.

More than 150 guests enjoy a glitzy night of food, drink and trophies being handed out.

The awards recognised excellence in a range of categories, including Best Chef of the Year, Vegetarian Restaurant of the Year, and Best Customer Service.

And several Scottish sites were recognised including Taal Indian Restaurant in Strathaven, which was named Curry Restaurant of the Year for Scotland.

Owner Sukhi Singh said: “We are so pleased with our win at the nation’s curry awards this year.

“To be declared the best curry restaurant in Scotland at a national level is a huge honour, especially considering we started out as a small business from a small village.

“We were proud to open our second restaurant over in Braidwood recently so have had a great couple years.

“We are still in awe to have won and are grateful for the amazing response.

“We could not have done this without the incredible support of all the staff and our loyal customers over the years.

“Thank you once again to all those involved and we hope to bring you great things in 2023.”

Other Scottish winners included legendary city centre eatery Swadish, which took home the Indian Restaurant of the Year Scotland crown, and Indian by Nature in Paisley, which was named the overall best restaurant in Scotland. The Curry Leaf in Ayr went one better, not only winning Takeaway of the Year for Scotland but also for the whole of the UK.

These awards celebrate the UK’S rich and diverse curry culture and encourages the continued growth and evolution of the industry, with the judges saying that the winners have “distinguished themselves with their exceptional quality, innovation, and consistency in offering a truly memorable dining experience”.

A spokesperson for The 1st Nation’s Curry Awards 2023 said: “It has been an unforgettable night, filled with incredible food, vibrant energy, and passionate conversations.

“We have celebrated the finest in the UK’S curry scene, recognising the creativity, innovation, and exceptional service that have become synonymous with this beloved cuisine.

“The UK’S curry industry is a vital part of our culture and these awards recognised the exceptional talents of the individuals and businesses that make it so special.

“Congratulations to all of the winners and nominees, and thank you to everyone who has participated and supported this event.”

We’re still in awe to have won and are grateful
