Fifty council houses for rent in estate

- JUDITH TONNER

Fifty new council houses for rent are to be created at a major new-build housing development.

The affordable properties form part of Taylor Wimpey’s 200-home Oakwood Grove development in Hamilton, and will be handed over on completion to South Lanarkshire Council.

Included will be a mixture of one and two-bedroomed cottage flats, two and threebedroomed terraced and semi-detached houses plus four-bedroomed detached properties.

South Lanarkshire housing chair, and Hamilton councillor, Davie Mclachlan visited the Taylor Wimpey site for a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the beginning of work.

The development off Meikle Earnock Road is part of the wider Brackenhill Farm development masterplan, part of the Hamilton community growth area.

Following a similar arrangement at the housebuilder’s Benthall Farm development in East Kilbride, where 67 properties were provided for social rent late last year, the council will go on to take ownership of “turnkey” homes which are ready to move into on the day keys are exchanged.

Councillor Mclachlan, who was joined at the ground-breaking by local authority and Taylor Wimpey representatives, said: “These new homes will be a welcome addition to meet the varying needs of the people of South Lanarkshire.

“This development at Brackenhill Farm, supported by the Scottish Government’s affordable housing supply programme funding, will contribute to our target to deliver 1300 additional homes in the next five years.”

Alison Henderson, who is Taylor Wimpey’s special projects manager, added: “This deal to provide 50 affordable homes in Hamilton marks a key milestone on the journey towards creating a diverse community within the wider Brackenhill Farm masterplan.

“We are committed to continuing to work closely with South Lanarkshire Council to ensure the Hamilton community can reap the benefits of our long-term investment in the area through the delivery of these 50 affordable homes for social rent.

“We have a proven track record and really look forward to confirming our next steps shortly.”
