Town to play starring role in TV drama

Keen-eyed locals have spotted film crews around the town shooting an Emmy award-winning TV crime drama.

The stars of the show Vigil, including Suranne Jones, are currently filming the second series in Hamilton.

It focuses on the enigmatic disappearance of a Scottish fishing trawler and a fatality aboard a Trident nuclear submarine, pitting the police against the Navy and British security services.

Filming was taking place at the Avonbridge Hotel on Carlisle Road last week and locals have also spotted the film crew at Maxim Park and the University of West of Scotland’s Lanarkshire campus.

One Facebook user said: “Oh wow. Will need to have a wee look today, hopefully, they will ask me for a part in it.”

Another added: “They were filming at the University last week in the underground car park. My work looks right into it, so we had a good view but didn’t see anyone famous.”

Game of Thrones actor Daniel Portman and star of Billy Elliot and Gangs of New York, Gary Lewis, are some of the cast from Scotland.

Makers of Line of Duty, World Productions, are responsible for Vigil as well, with Greenock’s own Martin Compston appearing in both.

Season one debuted in August 2021 and garnered more than 13 million viewers, making it the most-watched new drama premiere on UK television since Bodyguard in 2018.

Additionally, the series also received a BAFTA nomination and won an International Emmy.

It comes just weeks after locals spotted Hamilton’s council HQ making an appearance in hit Apple TV movie Tetris, doubling as a Soviet building in the Taron Egerton hit.

And back in 2018, former Doctor Who star Jenna Coleman was in town to shoot the fourpart series The Cry for BBC One.
