THE well-known ditty: ‘I’ve got the key of the door, never been 21 before!’ was based on the tradition that, when a person became 21, he or she would leave the parental home for pastures new.
The 21st birthday signified the start of an adult life, and the independence associated with this ‘coming of age’.
