DEMYSTIFYING MICHAEL
MYSTIFY: MICHAEL HUTCHENCE BBC Four, Friday, January 28, 9pm
■ TAKING its title from one of INXS’ biggest hits, Richard Lowenstein’s 2019 documentary film looks at the troubled life and career of the band’s lead singer who died in 1997 at the age of 37. Hutchence and his Australian bandmates found worldwide fame in the mid-1980s with a string of hit singles including Need You Tonight, What You Need, Suicide Blonde and Never Tear Us Apart, but the pressures of success didn’t always sit easily with the singer. The film profiles Hutchence with archive footage and interviews with friends, family and contemporaries including Bono, Kylie Minogue, Rosie O’Donnell and Helena Christensen. That’s followed by INXS: Live Baby Live at 10.35pm, a remastered version of the band’s preformance at Wembley Stadium in 1991.
