Ukraine: How YOU
The UK Government’s schemes will support thousands of Ukrainians fleeing war – here’s how you can get involved
If you’ve been moved to tears by footage of the war in Ukraine, you’re not alone. Hundreds of thousands of people in the UK have already sent help to the war-torn nation in the form of much-needed supplies and donations.
But if you want to do more, there are lots of ways you can help. The UK Government has set up the Homes for Ukraine scheme, which will allow refugees to find safety as British people open up their homes and households to people fleeing the conflict. And the response to this has been amazing – with a huge number of people and organisations registering their interest so far.
If you have family in Ukraine, you will understandably be worried about them, the UK will grant them a visa for three years. The Ukraine Family Scheme is free and your relatives won’t need any educational or language requirements to enter the UK.
Here, we answer all your questions about how you can help Ukrainians as they seek safety in the UK.
THE HOMES FOR UKRAINE SCHEME
This scheme offers a route to those who want to come to the UK from Ukraine and who have someone here willing to provide them with a home. People, charities, community groups and businesses can volunteer accommodation and provide a route to safety for Ukrainians and their immediate family members forced to escape their homeland.
How can I help?
There are two ways you can help through the Homes for Ukraine Scheme. If you know someone in Ukraine that you want to bring to the UK, then work with them to fill out the dedicated visa application. If you don’t know someone, you can fill out an expression of interest. More information is available at ukstandswithukraine. campaign.gov.uk.
How long do I have to provide accommodation?
We’re asking people to provide at least six months of stable accommodation – but you can extend this if you and your guest(s) want to do so.
What sort of space can I offer?
Accommodation can be anything from an empty room to an unoccupied home – as long as it’s safe, heated, free from health hazards and gives your guests adequate access to bathroom and kitchen facilities.
Am I going to be expected to cover my guest’s bills or provide meals?
No, you’ll just be asked to provide the accommodation. However, there is nothing stopping you from offering meals if you want to. An optional “thank you” payment of £350 per month will be provided to people who do host guests.
Will there be checks carried out to protect my family and my guests?
Yes, the local council will complete checks on the accommodation and living arrangements. Security checks will take place too, which will vary based on circumstances. More information is available at ukstandswithukraine. campaign.gov.uk
