A ONE-DAY-OLD baby died in a West London hospital after contracting a rare form of pneumonia, an inquest was told.

Thomas Hoskin’s mum, Monica Black, from Hanwell in Ealing, was taken to West Middlesex University Hospital in Isleworth on April 8, 2019.

West London Coroner’s Court heard how there were clear signs of baby Thomas having an acute infection during labour.

However, input from expert doctors was not requested as early as it could have been.

Thomas, the son of tennis coach Richard Hoskin and Monica Black, a production designer, was delivered by forceps and his condition at birth was unexpectedly extremely poor, the court heard.

Despite active resuscitation with all appropriate staff, he died in hospital shortly after his birth on April 9, 2019.

A record of the inquest reported that two clinicians were known to be in theatre, but other staff were working within the hospital and earlier senior input could have been obtained.

It added: “There was no clear evidence that this would have led to an earlier delivery of Thomas, due to the number of factors presenting at the time that all had to be balanced and no one course of action was risk free.”

The medical cause of death was given as one of a rare congenital pneumonia – an inflammatory lung disease which can be acquired due to infected amniotic fluid.

West London’s acting senior coroner Lydia Brown has written a prevention of future deaths report to t he National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

The court has been contacted for more details on her recommendations to the health board.
