Animal Rescue with Marion Garnett

Dedicated animal expert Marion Garnett, founder of the Ealing Animal Charities Fair, continues her column

LAST year, Dogs Trust spent more than £52,000 fuelling their dog ambulances. Mind you, they put the vehicles to good use.

Rescuing dogs from dog pounds, transferring dogs between rehoming centres and helping them find their forever home.

In 2023 Dogs Trust cared for 12,546 dogs and rehomed 9707. But, as we know, each of these numbers represents an animal with their own personality which, given the chance, they could share with their new owners. Tux is certainly waiting for his chance.

If you can handle a large dog, this beautiful Pyrenean Mastiff Cross is looking for patient owners who are willing to give him time to settle in and build a bond.

He struggles with being left alone and would like his owners to be around most of the day until he feels comfortable being left. He’d like to be the only pet in the home but is happy to have calm walking friends. He’d also benefit from more training.

If you’re interested in homing Tux, he’s in the care of Dogs Trust Harefield. Just a reminder that earlier this year, Dogs Trust changed the way they rehome dogs (Gazette January 31).

With the new system Dogs Trust ask you to tell them about your home, lifestyle and what sort of dog you want. They actively look to match you with a dog at your chosen centre.

On your application form you can add favourites to give them an idea of the dogs you like and they’ll take these into account as part of the matching process.

This means that if you’re interested in homing Tux, you can name him on your application form and Dogs Trust will consider you for Tux and other dogs like Tux. For more details of both Tux and the new rehoming process see dogstrust.org.uk.

It’s always reassuring to know that dog training is amongst the many useful services that Dogs Trust offer. Dog School is open to all dogs not just Dogs Trust dogs.

They offer a variety of classes either in a group, virtual or 1-2-1. There are special classes for dogs who are reactive to other dogs. They also offer discounted classes if you want dog training but can’t afford the classes. For more details of classes and prices, see dogstrust.org.uk.

Don’t forget that Dogs Trust has a food bank which is open daily (9am-4pm) where you can collect dog food. Donations of dog food are welcome. Their rehoming centre is at Harvil Road, Uxbridge UB9 6JW.
